Spontaneous massive duodenal perforation after ovarian cancer treatment with bevacizumab
AbstractBevacizumab has been used as an effective drug for ovarian cancer. However, serious adverse effects, such as gastrointestinal perforation, can occur. Spontaneous gastrointestinal perforation is an uncommon, yet life-threatening complication related to bevacizumab administration. We present the case of a 65-year-old Caucasian female who presented with acute abdomen 10 days after the first administration of bevacizumab for ovarian cancer treatment, and she was diagnosed intraoperatively with...

Sinking skin flap syndrome in the multi-trauma patient: a paradoxical management to TBI post craniectomy
AbstractSinking skin flap syndrome is a rare syndrome leading to increased intracranial pressure, known to neurosurgeons, yet uncommon and hardly ever reported in trauma patients. In a hospitalized trauma patient with declining neurological status, rarely do we encounter further deterioration by elevating the patients’ head, diuresis and hyperventilation. However, after craniectomy for trauma, a partially boneless cranium may be compressed by the higher atmospheric pressure, that intracranial pressure...

Multifocal abdominal endometriosis, a case report
AbstractMultifocal endometriosis found outside of the pelvis is very rare. We present here a case of endometriosis found in the pelvis, appendix and umbilicus. A 52-year-old female had a previous umbilical hernia repair, and years later started to develop a recurrent umbilical mass. After a full work-up, it was decided the patient have a diagnostic laparoscopy with wide local excision of umbilical mass to rule out any underlying malignancy. Findings during the procedure included an umbilical mass,...

Meningioma infiltrating into porous polymethylmethacrylate cranioplasty—report of a unique case
AbstractImplantation of a cranioplasty after osteoclastic craniotomy or craniectomy is one of the most common neurosurgical procedures, and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is one of the most frequently applied materials for cranioplasty. This report describes the unique case of a patient with recurrent transitional meningioma WHO I that infiltrated the PMMA cranioplasty 7 years after primary surgery. We propose to restrict the use of porous PMMA as cranioplasty after the removal of convexity meningioma.

Tracheostomy in a patient with COVID-19: a case report
AbstractSome of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with prolonged ventilation may require tracheostomy, which is an aerosol-generating procedure and poses a significant risk of viral transmission. We report our experience of the management of a patient with COVID-19 who underwent surgical tracheostomy and describe several essential infection control principles. In our patient, on the 14th day after intubation, an open tracheostomy was carried out because of the prolonged tracheal intubation...

Spontaneous intra-adrenal massive hematoma: possible extreme evolution of a non-secreting untreated adrenal adenoma
AbstractThe spontaneous adrenal hematoma is a rare event. An 83-year-old male patient presented a 26-cm asymptomatic retroperitoneal mass of doubtful renal–adrenal origin. He had been evaluated 10 years before for an adrenal incidentaloma of 2.3 cm and had refused surgery when it had reached 7 cm. Later, the mass enlarged to 26 cm and was surgically removed through an open anterior approach. The histopathology showed a solid 4 kg mass of fibrinoid–hemorrhagic material, partially necrotic, mixed with...

Gouverneur’ syndrome in a young Hispanic patient: A case report of a rare presentation of a rectal adenocarcinoma tumor
AbstractThis is an unusual case report of 32-year-old Hispanic male who presented with an early-onset advanced stage colorectal cancer with an enterovesical fistula. A 32-year-old man presented to our institution referring suprapubic pain, urinary frequency, dysuria and tenesmus for several weeks suggesting Gouverneur’s syndrome. Patient had been treated with oral antibiotics for his recurrent urinary tract infections without resolution. Associated unintentional weight loss, decreased appetite and...

Malignant triton tumor below the peritoneal reflection: a case report
AbstractMalignant triton tumor (MTT) is a rare subtype of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) histologically defined by rhabdomyoblastic differentiation. MTTs are primarily found in the head, neck, extremities and trunk, but rare cases of MTT within the buttock, the mediastinum and the retroperitoneum have also been documented. We present the case of a 47-year-old male patient who initially presented with right flank pain and hematuria in July 2019, who was found to have a large pelvic...

Sleeve gastrectomy without bougie is safe and effective operation: case report
AbstractSleeve gastrectomy (SG) is an effective method for weight loss; it is done by laparoscopy or open approach; it is a restrictive procedure and involves removing part of the stomach by cutting over bougie, which ensures that stenosis doesn’t occur. Bougie may cause esophageal perforation. There are studies that show the size of bougie used and weight loss are related. We show a case of open SG without using bougie at all. It is an effective and safe method and results in ~30% of weight loss...

Laparoscopic approach for diaphragmatic hernia repair in adult: our experience of four cases
AbstractDiaphragmatic hernia can be congenital or acquired. Usual clinical presentation may range from asymptomatic cases to serious respiratory/gastrointestinal symptoms and occasionally atypical presentation as lumbar hernia also. The diagnosis of diaphragmatic hernia is based on clinical investigation and is confirmed by plain X-ray film and computed tomography scan. Various treatment approaches, open, laparoscopic and combination, are available for this condition. However, laparoscopic approach...

Ultra wide field angiography documented peripheral retinal eovascularization as cause of vitreous hemorrhage after scleral buckle surgery#
AbstractWe describe an unusual case of ultra wide fluorescein angiography (UWFA) documented peripheral retinal neovascularization (NVE) with delayed vitreous hemorrhage after placement of an encircling scleral buckle (a common procedure for repair of retinal detachment). Anterior segment ischemia is a rare complication after scleral buckle surgery for the treatment of retinal detachment and results from altered choroidal flow through the impingement of the anterior and long posterior ciliary arteries....

A rare case of ileocolic intussusception due to severe endometriosis
AbstractIntestinal intussusception is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction; intestinal intussusception associated with endometriosis is very rare. The varied clinical presentations make the diagnosis demanding. In this article, we report the case of a young female patient with an intestinal obstruction due to intussusception. The successive histologic examination of the resected sample showed advanced endometriosis. This is a very rare entity with only a few similar cases reported in the literature.
