Bill for Safe Food Act seeks to consolidate federal oversight
Citing fragmented food safety oversight, which is split up between 15 federal agencies, two lawmakers want Congress to scrap the current system and the ineffective laws that regulate it. Pork industry wants FDA out of livestock genome editing
The pork industry wants the regulation of livestock genome editing transferred to the USDA from the Food and Drug Administration. The USDA already regulates genome editing of plants. To support the transfer, an industry trade association has launched the “Keep America First in Agriculture” campaign. The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) is sponsoring the effort. Sandwich firm allowed to restart after Listeria outbreak
The sandwich producer at the center of a Listeria outbreak that has killed five people in England has been given permission to restart activity. The Good Food Chain voluntarily ceased production June 5 and withdrew all products that remained within date parameters. A total of 43 hospital operations across England were supplied with the company’s pre-packed sandwiches and salads. Hepatitis A outbreak linked to school canteen food
Public Health England is investigating an outbreak of Hepatitis A linked to food eaten at a school canteen. A total of 17 people with Hepatitis A have been confirmed connected to Outwood Academy in Ripon, a city in North Yorkshire. Three other people have Hepatitis A in the Ripon area, but the source of illness for these patients remains under investigation.
